Who are the dames? We are a group of friends who have known one other for a very long time… This is for women in their own right – not wives, mums, not grans, not sex objects, not clothes horses.

Dames like to have fun. So every month we bring you reviews of books, plays, exhibitions and places that have caught our imaginations, and, more importantly, have had an impact on us.

Dames have different connotations for different people: a ‘classy dame’ comes straight out of an old black and white movie, someone who’s made a ‘Dame’ will appear on the Queen’s Honours List. The term can appear derogatory or class ridden.

We will be focusing on one or two issues at a time. These pages will range widely, from the dominant social issues of the day, like assisted dying, to more oblique problems, such as representation and misrepresentation in the media.
