Spanning 125 years, it showcases paintings, prints, drawings, photography, sculpture, and installations that capture the distinctive gaze between creative peers.<br><br>This exhibition is memorable for the critical appreciation of one artist of another. Whether it is their partner, friend or just a contemporary, we gain insight into their perception, opinion and respect for a fellow artist.&nbsp; On arrival however, before viewing the portraits you are met with a lifesize set of cut-out representations of female artists. This is the work of <strong>Lubaina Himid<\/strong> that was first exhibited in 1994, and form part of a wider installation inspired by a 19<sup>th<\/sup> century painting by Horace Vernet, <em>The Studio<\/em>, in which he depicted himself alongside radical peers \u2013 all men.&nbsp; Himid\u2019s installation pays homage to women artists: breakers of glass ceilings past and present.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_111511-1320x990.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lubaina Hamid\/damesnet<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>These artists are portrayed as artworks emblematic of their practice. Apparently when the installation was first exhibited, Himid challenged visitors to walk among the figures and see how many they could name as a comment as to who gets written into art history.&nbsp; Those portrayed at Pallant include portraitist <strong>Elisabeth Louise Vig\u00e9e Le Brun<\/strong>, surrealist <strong>Frida Kahlo<\/strong> bearing monkey and orthopaedic corset, conceptual artist <strong>Barbara Kruger<\/strong>, known for her feminist aphorisms, <strong>Bridget Riley<\/strong>\u2019s characteristic stripes in an Egypt-inspired palette, <strong>Claudette Johnson<\/strong>\u2019s celebration of black womanhood, and photographer and poet <strong>Maud Sulter<\/strong>\u2019s celebration of European and African cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now back to the exhibition itself; it is about relationships, many of which were begun at art school, and which were to prove long-lasting. The portraits show fellow artists at work and at play, and they give valuable insight into some of the artists\u2019 groups that were formed, both formal and informal.&nbsp; In damesnet we have often highlighted women artists that have been overlooked, both intentionally and unintentionally.&nbsp; So for obvious reasons I will focus on works in the exhibition by women, although there are some magnificent paintings by many well-known male artists.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11018\" srcset=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-1320x1760.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250725_113538-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eileen Agar at the Royal Pavilion by Lee Miller\/damesnet<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Lee Miller and Eileen Agar created many images of each other; one particularly striking image is of <em>Eileen Agar at the Royal Pavilion<\/em>. Miller took the photo during a visit to Brighton in 1937. Agar was known for her distinctive headwear and her onion-shaped hat echoes the forms of Brighton Pavilion\u2019s domes and columns. What you see is what they are.&nbsp; A nice detail is the size of their brushes; Joffe\u2019s is large while Myerscough\u2019s is slender, reflecting their differing painting styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Caroline Coon\u2019s <em>Pauline Boty Grand Passion<\/em>, 1992, is dedicated to pop artist Boty, who died prematurely aged 28 in 1966.
