Not sharing in the global enthusiasm for this or that can leave you feeling churlish or even antisocial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I\u2019ve done enough nodding and smiling politely about the following topics when they come up, and it\u2019s time to come clean and say I don\u2019t like\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abba<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing against them personally, lovely people, etc., etc. but they just don\u2019t do it for me. Needless to say the dames had an outing to see the film of Mamma Mia, and a jolly good time was had by all, but I don\u2019t mind if I never hear any of their songs again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I never get the same rush of pleasure or nostalgia when I happen to hear them in the way that I do with, say, \u2018I\u2019m Not In Love\u2019 or \u2018Space Oddity\u2019. And as for \u2018Dancing Queen\u2019 \u2013 well, what is there to dance to there? It\u2019s got a slow, plodding beat that does nothing to get me on my feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(In passing, I could never understand the preference for Agnetha over Frida, either\u2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Honey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/honey.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7935\" width=\"241\" height=\"346\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Honey is the metaphor for everything that is sweet and bounteous and healthy, and has been for thousands of years \u2013 the Promised Land was flowing with milk and honey. It\u2019s a term of endearment, the object of Winnie the Pooh\u2019s passion, and signifies loveliness and pleasure as a prefix in \u2018honeymoon\u2019 and \u2018honeychile\u2019. It\u2019s even antiseptic. But I just don\u2019t like it. It has a metallic taste that puts me off, and I can never detect any difference between acacia honey, orange blossom honey or any other of the fancy honeys, and bog-standard own-brand honey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give me golden syrup preferably from a green and gold tin bearing the legend \u2018out of the strong came forth sweetness\u2019. It has a matchless depth of flavour and smoothness \u2013 and, sadly no beneficial qualities whatsoever, unless you count balm for the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trainers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7937\" width=\"169\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe.png 600w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe-203x203.png 203w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe-60x60.png 60w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe-147x147.png 147w, https:\/\/damesnet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/trainerframe-184x184.png 184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Trainers hit the big time as everyday wear in the 1990s, and I\u2019ve been waiting for them to go out of style ever since. Instead they\u2019ve become ever more egregious, more bulbous, more garish, more branded \u2013 more like alien life forms battening onto your feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what\u2019s with the near-universal white edging on the soles, guaranteed to go grubby in a week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve always owned one pair of trainers for the express purpose of wearing in the gym, and at one time I could pride myself on them being the uncoolest trainers on the planet: from a Clarks (Clarks!) discount outlet in Ebbw Vale, they were dun-coloured all over and served me very well for about ten years, until the day my Zumba teacher asked me to see him after class. How exciting! Was he going to ask me to take part in one of his dance-a-thons? No, he was going to tell me that he didn\u2019t think my beloved Clarks provided enough ankle support for a woman of my years\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, anticipating that after ten years I was likely to need a new pair, I had already bought a half-price (naturally) pair of Geox trainers that are black \u2013 BLACK \u2013 all over.
